Job Description

The post holder will be responsible for administration and management of the research (biological) laboratories in King’s Cross, working closely with and supporting laboratory-based activities of teams of scientists.

The main laboratory management responsibilities will include day-to-day maintenance of laboratory facilities and equipment, inventory management and planning, assisting with purchase of general consumables and dealing with general duties while ensuring compliance with Health & Safety regulations within the laboratories and offices.

They will be expected to operate independently in organising and planning their work activities with the target of maintaining and improving safety and efficiency in the laboratories and potential to act as a trainer and supervisor to junior staff.

Key Responsibilities


  • Keep laboratory facilities in good working order and liaise with the building’s Facilities Management Team where necessary.
  • Support future expansion of laboratory facilities when required.
  • Keep an up to date record of equipment and associated maintenance, calibration and training.
  • Organise maintenance visits in a timely manner including their associated computer hardware and software, carrying out regular calibration as required.
  • Assist with new equipment purchasing, installation, staff training and servicing.
  • Make recommendations and actively contribute to the continual improvement of the operational service within the laboratories.


  • Manage and maintain the inventory of Oribiotech manufactured consumables for both internal use and dispatch to partners, ensuring that the inventory management system is kept up to date at all times.
  • Act as the main point of contact for the management of laboratory consumables, maintaining and monitoring inventory levels and working closely with the Finance Team to resolve any procurement-related issues.

Health & Safety

  • Act as the health and safety officer for Oribiotech’s biological laboratory.
  • Prepare and update standard operating procedures, COSHH, risk assessments, accident/near-miss reports and other Health and Safety-related documentation.
  • Have a detailed understanding of the laboratory work-related hazards/risks, and advise on the conduct of risk assessments and the control measures (preventive and protective) necessary for managing the risks/hazards identified.
  • Understand the limits of their own Health and Safety competence and seek external advice when required.


  • Experience of lab management
  • Experience with commonly used laboratory Health and Safety procedures.
  • Experience with placing orders and maintaining stock levels.


  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good interpersonal and written and oral communication skills with a wide range of people at varied levels.
  • An ability to respond clearly and effectively in dealing with unforeseen problems and circumstances.
  • Good time-management skills. Ability to prioritise a varied workload and to work under pressure to meet deadlines while maintaining a high quality of work.
  • An open, flexible, proactive and positive approach to working in a start up environment.


  • A life sciences degree (BSc or equivalent vocational qualification and / or equivalent experience in laboratory management)
  • Safety training and qualifications, especially training in aspects relating to biological safety and laboratory techniques.
